This is 11m performance of Tokina 11-16 F2.8 lens.
All shots were taken on a tripod.
Apertures F2.8, F4.0, F5.6, F8, F16 tested and its compared to F8. By using the custom compare box at the end of page, you can compare any aperture photo to another as you wish.
At F2.8 there is some vignetting which effects both center and corners. In corners its heavier. But I must admit its not too much of a vignetting for such a wide lens and especially considering its F2.8. You can definetely live with it but its there.
At F4 vignetting decreases. It's nearly lost in the center but it still lurks in the corners but it's much lighter now.
When stopped down to F5.6 (and above), vignetting is gone completely.
We can tell the same story for sharpness. At F2.8 sharpness is so so in the center and weak in the corners. But still impressive for such a wide lens and since its F2.8.
Shaprness improves at F4 but its still weak in the corners. When stopped down to F5.6, its very good. Its as good as F8 for the center and its very close to F8 in the corners. There is still very slight improvement of corner sharpness at F8 but I think F5.6 is very very close.
F8 is the sweet spot of the lens, just like many other lenses.
At F11, it still very good and close to F8 performance but if check carefully, F8 is still better.
F16 quality drops a little more. Its still very good but not as good as F11 and especially F8.
So for good performance, shooting at F5.6 is suggested and for best performance its F8 at this focal length. Unless there is a very good reason, you needn't (shouldn't) go above F8 with Tokina 11-16 at 11mm.
