This comparison demostrates how compact camera apertures are different than SLR camera apertures.

In SLR cameras even if your lens is as fast as F1.8, you try not to shoot with such a large aperture because SLR lenses' performance increase when you step down. In SLR world there is no lens which shoots better photos in F1.8 than F5 or F8.

However compact cameras lenses can be just the opposite as this comparison demostrates. Nikon obviously optimized P300 specifically for F1.8 because its photo quality is much better in F1.8, than F5.

If you are a SLR user, you can also astonished to see depth of fields are nearly same in F1.8 and F5.0 which is again something impossible to see in SLR cameras. In compact cameras even very large apertures like F1.8 can give you a large depth of field due to the structure of its optics. [Review by Sinan Ozturk]
