Both are compact cameras. Leica D-LUX3 is a pretty old camera (announced in 2006), however in its time, it was very prominent and pricey (around 1500 USD). Sony RX100 make 2 is the compact camera of the year (2013).
Leica D-LUX3 has a 1/1.65" (8.498 x 4.78 mm) CCD sensor. Sony RX100 2 has 1″ (13.2 x 8.8 mm) backlighted CMOS sensor. CCD sensors are known to give good photos under bright light conditions, however they fail badly in low light and tend to be very noisy too. On the contrary backlight CMOS sensors performs exceptionally in low light conditions.
In this comparisons photos are taken under bright sun so Leica has an edge. However its only fair considering it has a smaller sensor and quite old against Sony RX100.
Shots are handheld and the reason Sony's ISO is 160 is that this is the base ISO for Sony RX100 2. [Review by Sinan Ozturk]
