In their widest apertures (first comparison) both lenses are weak. They have vignetting, loss of contrast and not sharp at all.

When Minolta 50mm 1.4 is stopped down to F1.7 and compared to Sony 50mm 1.8's F1.8, Minolta gets better but both are still weak.

They start to get better in F2. Minolta 50mm 1.4 is still better than Sony 50mm 1.8 and Sony 50mm 1.8's strong vignetting is still lurking in the corners.

At F2.8, Minolta gets sharp. Sony is better than F2 but its still not sharp enough.

At F4, Sony 50mm 1.8 also recovers but still can't beat sharpness of Minolta 50mm 1.4 [Review by Sinan Ozturk]
